Harmony in the Halls is a youth-led music discovery program serving young people in historically under-resourced communities, with a particular commitment to Black and Brown youth on Chicago's West Side.
Through Harmony Discovery, young people can hear live violin, explore rhythm and sound, experience the instrument, and receive free introductory violin instruction in a welcoming, low-pressure environment. No previous musical experience is required.
If a participant wants to continue learning, Harmony helps the family connect with established music schools, community organizations, instructors, and other trusted facilities for ongoing lessons.
Harmony also provides free live youth performances for senior communities, using music to build meaningful connections across generations.

What Harmony Is
Harmony opens the first door to music. We give young people who may never have had access to private lessons or an instrument the opportunity to experience violin and receive basic introductory instruction at no cost.
Harmony is not designed to replace established conservatories, community music schools, private teachers, or school music programs. Our introductory instruction helps a child answer an important question: Do I enjoy this enough to keep going?
When the answer is yes, Harmony helps the family find the next door — an established provider equipped to deliver sustained technical instruction.

OUR MISSION
Harmony in the Halls expands equitable access to music discovery for young people in historically under-resourced communities, with a particular commitment to Black and Brown youth on Chicago's West Side. Through free introductory violin experiences and instruction, youth mentorship, connections to established music-education providers, and free performances for senior communities, Harmony helps young people discover their musical potential while strengthening connections across generations.
A child should be able to try an instrument before cost becomes a barrier.
WHY FREE INTRODUCTORY LESSONS MATTER
Beginning violin can require an instrument, supplies, lessons, transportation, and a recurring family commitment before a child even knows whether violin is something they enjoy. Harmony reduces that first barrier by allowing youth to try violin and receive introductory instruction for free. The goal is not mastery in one session.
The goal is exposure, confidence, curiosity, and enough guided experience for a young person and family to decide whether they want to pursue continued study.
Harmony Discovery
Is the heart of the youth program: a free introductory music experience for young people who may have little or no previous exposure to instrumental study.
DISCOVER
Hear a youth violinist perform and experience the sound and possibilities of the instrument.
A first lesson designed for discovery.
Harmony's introductory instruction is designed to be safe, welcoming, encouraging, and appropriate for beginners. It gives participants enough guided contact with the violin to understand what learning the instrument feels like.
Possible introductory skills: parts of the violin and bow; safe instrument handling; basic playing posture; beginner bow-hold concepts; pizzicato; open-string recognition; steady beat and simple rhythms; listening and imitation; and a simple first musical challenge.
What it is not: Harmony Discovery is not intended to provide the progressive weekly technical training required for long-term violin development. Students who want to continue are encouraged and assisted in transitioning to qualified, established music-education providers.
Discovery should lead somewhere.
MUSIC PATHWAYS & REFERRALS
Harmony's work does not end when a child says, “I want to keep playing.” That is when the pathway component begins.
Harmony will develop relationships with established music schools, conservatories, community organizations, school programs, nonprofit providers, and qualified instructors so families can identify realistic options for sustained instruction. Pathway guidance may consider age, instrument interest, neighborhood, transportation, tuition, scholarships, financial aid, instrument access, program availability, and readiness for ongoing study.
Harmony introduces, guides, and connects. Established educators and partner organizations provide sustained technical instruction.

FREE SENIOR COMMUNITY PERFORMANCES
Harmony provides free live youth music performances to senior living communities and senior-serving organizations. There is no performance fee to the senior community.
Programs can combine familiar standards, popular songs, culturally recognizable selections, and accessible classical repertoire. Performances create opportunities for joy, memory, conversation, and intergenerational connection while giving young musicians meaningful opportunities to serve.
Over time, Harmony's model creates a powerful cycle: young people discover music, pursue training through established providers, develop as musicians, and may later return to Harmony as mentors, volunteers, or performers serving seniors and the broader community.

A child does not need previous music training to participate in Harmony Discovery. Families can use the experience to learn whether violin sparks genuine interest before pursuing ongoing lessons. When a participant wants to continue, Harmony helps identify established next-step opportunities whenever possible.

A bridge into Chicago's existing music ecosystem.
Harmony seeks relationships with established music schools, community programs, educators, libraries, schools, churches, youth organizations, and instrument-access partners. These relationships allow Harmony to reach new young people and create a responsible handoff when participants are ready for sustained instruction.
IMPACT

Harmony should track Discovery participants, free introductory violin experiences delivered, families requesting pathway assistance, referrals to established programs, participants who begin continued instruction, youth volunteers, partner organizations, free senior performances, and seniors reached.
